Susan Boyle: Never Too Late To Dream Your Dream

Susan Boyle: Never Too Late To Dream Your Dream

In less than a week, the unassuming, 47 year old Scottish woman on the left, has managed to open the eyes of two continents, perhaps the world. If you’ve been under a rock, (I know, I’m late in mentioning it), please watch her performance on Britain’s Got Talent: Susan Boyle, I Dreamed A Dream, Les Miserables. (Embedding of all the videos have been disabled). Didn’t expect much of anything at first, right? But, I can bet, if you have any emotions at all, you were cheering along with the audience by the end.

I’ve written quite a bit about pursuing your dreams and if, after a certain age, it’s worth the hassle. Susan Boyle is an unemployed, single lady, who has a cat and, from what I’ve read and heard, was bullied as a child, because she was quiet, suffered through depression, and had even tried to audition for others in the past, but never given the chance. Who, in their right minds, would, or could never, give this woman a chance? And why? Because she isn’t what society deems as “star quality,” or attractive.

She proved everyone wrong.

Not just through her talent, but with the courage she had to walk on stage and take the chance. The video link on YouTube, at the time of this post, has almost 12 million views-and this is only one video. The world is watching. I know I’ll keep up to date via YouTube, since the US doesn’t broadcast Britain’s Got Talent, (not on BBC America!!!). It just goes to show, the most precious of gems can be found in the plainest of packages.

I know! People are so cruel- it’s like I said, gems are found in the unlikeliest of places-and Susan Boyle is one hell of a gem.

Finally broke down and watched it. I have to tell you – I actually had tears – and that does not happen too often. Really great!

I find myself strangely drawn to this woman and I don’t even have an eye brow fetish :p

You’ve GOT to search Stavros Flatly on YouTube from the same show – very funny!

I watched them- the son and dad uh dance team? lol- funny. But, come on, if Susan doesn’t win-I’ll be disappointed, and let’s face it- she’s a star already. Do a search on youtube for “cry me a river susan boyle”- it might show up under related videos too- it’s a full version of the song, from a CD made for charity 10 years ago-of which only 1000 were made. This woman has more talent than we’re only beginning to see.

  4. She’s a lovely highly-talented lady and I hope she gets everything she desires and deserves.

But let me buck the trend just a little bit.

This is one of the most manipulative programmes in the world, the subliminal games it plays are incredibly sophisticated.

Susan lived the Hollywood Movie Dream on that stage. Of all the odd movies, it is Napoleon Dynamite which epitomises it best – the outsider takes the stage and, against all odds, wins over the room and saves the day.

But Susan – lovely person as she is – is not that great of a singer. Watch the Youtube thing once more, remove the build up, the hype, hyperbole, subtle background music, slow mo exit – all of that. Look away and listen to the singing.

We are being manipulated and fortunes are being made off it all.

It is crucial that the lovely woman is not damaged by the process which does not have her best interests as its primary concern.

We have been entertained but, as Ancient Rome proved, the entertainers don’t always do well out of the deal.

I hope Susan rides this beast to happiness and fulfillment. I, too, am happy for her.

    Just a little afraid, that’s all…

While I agree that shows such as this, (we had an American version), manipulate not only the participants, but the viewers as well- any “reality show” does, I have to disagree with you on a few of your points.

I do believe she has a tremendous gift. I’ll find the link to the recording from 10 years ago-long before this show, of her singing for a charity CD. The audition on Britian’s Got Talent isn’t a fluke. The woman can sing-and better than anyone I’ve heard in a long time. Sure, the show was edited for hype- it’s to be expected, however you can’t dismiss the looks on the faces of the judges, or the outpouring of support from people around the world.

As for those who either win, or are prominent contestants, I can only go by what I’ve seen with American Idol- only a few haven’t “made it big”, Ruben Studderd, Fantasia and I have to say Clay Aiken, because well, I don’t consider his so-called success on Broadway, talent. Look at Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson. Jennifer didn’t even win Idol-yet, she has an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

AI got them so far and once the contracts were up- the decisions they made, or their managers made for them, (and talent), pushed them the rest of the way. I do hope, for Susan Boyle’s sake, she isn’t paraded around as some kind of freak-show find. I also think she’s more grounded as a person than we give her credit for.

This is our reminder to not judge a book by it’s cover. I think it is sad that this is such news, if we didn’t judge people by their looks, it wouldn’t be such a story. She is a lovely singer, it is just too bad people were so shocked and astounded that someone who looks the way she does could sing so well. Sad. I wish her all the luck in the world!

  6. She is one of but thousands, I’m sure, that are never given the chance just because they don’t fit the physical mode. These reality talent shows are also ageist (at least in the US. Hell, American Idol won’t give anyone over the age of 30 a chance.
The most talented artists that are far more seasoned and blessed with the ability to evoke true emotion when singing are those who have actually lived some life!

I was so emotional when watching the video. A couple of the pricks in the audience pissed me off though. Like the chick who pulled that face that basically said ‘ugh’.

I would totally give all my votes to her!
