It’s Grocery Coupon Time Again!

With prices of everything going up, I am looking for ways to become frugal. That’s one word I never thought would be in my vocabulary, because as my mom has always said, we have caviar tastes with a government cheese budget. The price for regular unleaded gas went up to $3.65 a gallon yesterday-seriously, the oil companies should just attach an IV to us and drain the blood from our veins.

Of course, with the rise in gas prices, comes the rise in food costs. Even the so-called off-brand cheap cereal isn’t cheap. When I can, I use grocery coupons-saving $1 is, well, saving $1. I have a new site I’ve been using, Penny Pincher Gazette because they offer quite a few cereal coupons and dog food coupons I print for my mom. I’m waiting to find coupons for razor blades since it costs more to buy the blades than the razor itself. To use the site, you do have to sign-up, but it’s painless and I have yet to receive any spam. If you’re looking to save money like myself-use coupons-the savings add up.

Another great way to save money at the grocery store is to sign up for each store’s “value card.” They have certain items on sale every week, sometimes half off, and it’s a great way to stock up on commonly used items.

I’ll probably start printing off coupons myself as well. Thanks for the links, hadn’t heard of them before.

Every dollar saved is an extra dollar in your pocket.

I think Giant in our area has those discount cards, but I don’t think Shoppers has one.

I love saving by coupons and shoppers cards. Another great way to save is to shop at Walmart because they honor all other stores adds. Its just hard to keep track of which store had what on sale. I like to make my own granola, its healthier for you, cheaper than the store’s cereal and the kids love it.

You know, I tell my kids all the time, pennies make dollars. Every penny you want to throw away, give to me!

    Hi,

If you think that prices are high in the US, try shopping in the UK.

Our grocery prices have risen %15 in two months. For example, 16 slices of bacon £3.07 the very next week it was £3.58. Now, as you know, apply that to a weekly shop and you have a much bigger bill.

Looks like its the same the world over.

All the best - Take care

    Hi,

Sorry can anyone tell me the price in Dollars for 16 of bacon in the US?

    Just Curious. lol

Even the prices of food here in Utah is way up. I wish I could go to a website that could search my local grocery store’s ads and tell me what’s on sale and where. Perhaps I’d give it a list of things I want and every week I get an email telling me what things are on sale where. Then, add some coupons to sweeten the deal and save some cash.

Great post - I’ve been using HotCouponWorld.com for a while now, and they’re really good (at least in my area and many others) about posting the circulars in advance and then telling you where you can get coupons to match up with the sales and get items for close to free. I scored about 10 jars of Ragu sauce for about $10 the other day, plus several boxes of dryer sheets for $1 each.

You can get stuff like toothpaste for free at Walgreen’s and CVS if you use the discounts and coupons correctly. Just stock up on dry goods and sealed stuff and you’ll have more than enough to get through the months when those items aren’t on sale.

    Another dollar saving, thanks!

Awesome post and comments - I wish I had something to contribute, but I’m still a newbie to couponing. This reminds me of those 50s housewives whose husbands worked outside the home while they kept everything in line on the homefront…it would be lovely if we could all go back to that lifestyle (or at least have an economy where that was a choice for all of us).

Everyone needs to save with coupons in this day and age! Thanks for the links, K

Thanks for sharing that site, I think I will give it a go. Coupons are great to use at places like Walmart, that will value any coupon even if it isn’t their own. JBourne had a good point too, sign up for their value cards.

For me I actually like to go to grocery stores that just discount there prices without needing coupons, but you are right because sometimes you can get some really amazing deals with manufacturer coupons. Another thing I have been getting into that goes along with coupons is entering contests with coupons or the dumb radio contests too.

  17. puppy love - 06/25/2008 at 2:20 am

thanks for the tip on the coupon site, seems like I always end up with coupons for stuff I don’t really need, so that might help alot, pet food is expensive, especially for good cat food so I’m going to look for that too

If every penny matters, I wonder why many people are happy leaving their money in low-interest savings accounts? To me, it makes much more sense to put money where it can earn a higher interest rate.

While not exactly related to “coupons,” at least this is another strategy to employ in order to soften the financial pounding that we’re taking in the checkout line.
