To Buy, Or Not To Buy An Apple iPhone.

Not that I have the money to actually buy an iPhone, but this was the discussion at work yesterday. Call it a geek debate, if you will, but a few co-workers were so against the iPhone I could see the veins popping on their foreheads. The main reason given for being against buying an iPhone-it isn’t worth the price. Well, what phone is worth over $500? None, if you ask me. With the prices of mobile cell phones on the rise, many sites are now discussing the best phones and prices.

Discusswireless.com offers a forum, (a very nice feature), for owners and those considering a certain brand of phone, to discuss the pros and cons. What did the site say about the iPhone? While the features are nice, the price along with the abundant issues associated with the iPhone crashing are things to consider before buying. The only way I would buy one is is someone gave me $600. Also, the site is offering a 5% discount on any phone purchased through PureMobile.com. Go to this page, Compare Unlocked Cell Phone Prices for more information.

What are your thoughts? Are cell phones with all the bells and whistles worth the higher prices?

I don’t think any brand new technology is worth the price. I WANT an iPhone, but I am waiting until my current contract runs out in May 2009, by then there will be so many competors the price will be much less. But just like buying a brand new car, you lose a chuck of money when you buy a brand new gadget.

I think that it all matters how much convenience you want. I have the Motorola Q and I absolutely love it. I get my email real time from my server, I can browser the internet and find stuff when I need it and of course I can make calls. It is great. I have played with the iPhone and it is very cool. Since the price just came down $200 not to long ago it is a little more attractive. $600 is too much for me. To each his own I guess.

I plan on being the last person on the planet to have a mobile phone, but if I were to get one I would want all the features. My friends don’t call me, they IM or email. I am considering an Internet phone, $100 or less seems like a fair price.

I’d be perfectly happy to forget that the iPhone exists. Unfortunately, people won’t stop talking and arguing about it so I don’t think I’ll be too successful at forgetting.

I just bought my Iphone last weekend and if someone is trying to sell you one at $600 run! The 8Gig is going for $399 now.

I can say that I completely hooked on it, in fact that can be a huge problem due to the fact that you will run the battery out pretty quickly!

The keyboard does take a little getting used to but it is much better than texting using the usual cell phone numeric keypads!

Don’t do it. Don’t try and be trendy just to be trendy. All the idiots that had to have them the first day, just turns me off things.

I have an iPhone but I won’t recommend anyone buying it unless it comes with 3G support! Mobile devices here in Asia are already supporting 3.6G and come with 5MP cameras!

American mobile technology still has a long way to catch up with Asia.

I wouldn’t buy any phone just to be trendy- I’d buy for the features and functionality only-I learned my lesson with the Razr-although I hit a nice deal at a penny, (yes a penny), and bought two, the phone itself was so hyped at the time and I was so disappointed after I started using it. Since I’ve learned most of the iPhone’s features can be added to the iTouch, (illegal but hey who cares), I’ll attempt that and not buy. I don’t even use my cell often, basically emergencies or when I’m bored driving. For those of you who have the iPhone- have you had issues, such as crashes or not working at all?

  9. Emily says:

    Hi!

I’ve been using iPhone for three weeks now but I am not using the phone functionality because it does not support my SIM card. My SIM is a 3G card but iPhone only supports up to 2G SIM cards.

Anyway, during this time, it crashed once as I was installing a game. I guess I was impatient and pressed a button when I should not have.

I just had to hardpress to shut it down but at that time, I thought, “Oh shit! I can’t even remove the battery!”

You know, sometimes a phone may hang and does not respond to the hardpress to shut the phone and we may have to remove the battery.

Well, that doesn’t work for iPhone LOL

I went to the Apple Store to see what all the fuss is about and it is a nice phone, but yes, $500 is somewhat pricey. More than I can afford for a cell phone …

  11. Rob Schultz says:

I bought a used iPhone off of a co-worker who could not handle the lack of tactile feedback from the touchscreen. Being an Apple fanboy, I can’t lie…I wanted it the moment it came out, but thankful I was a bit of a tightwad and got one that was a mere few weeks old for a fairly large discount.

I love the phone, the email access, and the Internet (on WiFi, the edge makes me want to cry), but it’s AT&T’s abhorrent service that I could easily do without. The only thing more unreliable are weathermen.

If you’re interested you can see my write up of one month with the Apple iPhone on my site.

Get one because you need the functionality…if in fact you do.

  12. Beth says:

Rob: AT&T is horrible, but in this state is the only cell phone company with decent reception. Most of the others only cover areas near major interstates, but with AT&T we can pick up service in more remote areas. When I do finally upgrade, I would consider a Blackberry first, especially when I start traveling with my job.

Emily: I’ve had issues with just the piddly Razr hanging after going through my address book. Plus, I have to shut it off and back on at times just to get it to ring-I think this has more to do with AT&T than the phone, though.

  13. Toni says:

    Hey,

The text feature alone is worth that, mind cost £500 so $1000 to get one that isn’t on contract, and I love it, twas worth every penny! :)

  14. Chris says:

I bought my new phone right before the iphone came out so it is even a possibility for me, but I am intrigued as to what will come next and at what price since this one seems to be so highly valued.
