My Dream Geek Project For The New Year.

I have been wanting to build my own PC for years now, I’ve just never had the money to do so. I was once obsessed with browsing TigerDirect.com and NewEgg.com, putting together all the components I would need. Last night, I was thinking about bringing my desktop here, from my mother’s house, then thought, ok it needs a hard drive. Then, the browsing began. I found that TigerDirect had lower prices than NewEgg and all of the components I’ve chosen so far come from there. I still need to decide the graphics, sound, memory etc., but I have the primary items picked:

  1. The case. I have no reason for choosing and LED case other than the fact- it’s damn pretty to look at. I wish I could find pink LED -but alas, I’ve yet to come across any. If someone knows where I can find them tell me. I like the blue, it gives it a stylish look, but pink would be more, me. Here are the specs and below is the picture of the case: Case Specs
  2. blue LED computer case

  3. I went with the combo motherboard/CPU. I know, the lazy way to go about it but it does end up less expensive. The CPU is a 3.0ghz Pentium D-here are the specs: Motherboard/CPU Specs
  4. For the hard drive I wanted retail so I wouldn’t have to buy the screws, brackets etc. I’m going with 160GB- that’s all I need and I don’t see the point in anything more. Plus, it’s a good deal. Here are the specs: Hard Drive Specs
  5. I’m adding the hard drive cooler and CPU fan together. If anyone has a suggestion on a CPU fan, let me know. I went with the least expensive in case it was difficult to install or broke etc. I went with a little more expensive HD cooler. Here are the specs:
    Hard drive cooler, CPU Cooler.
  6. The last item on my list to this point is the DVD Burner. Again, I don’t burn DVDs, (at least not yet), so I really don’t need something extremely expensive. Here are the specs: DVD Burner

That is my dream geeky project for 2008. I would love to be able to afford to build this by Summer at least. If anyone has suggestions or recommendations- let me know, I’m open to knew ideas and products. God Bless the geek in all of us.

Pentium-D? C’mon, for such a good cook you can do better than that! What’s cost up to this point? If you want your new computer to rock I recommend at least a Pentium Core 2-Duo! Don’t forget that you’ll need some RAM too – 1GB or more at least!
I also love shopping and building specs online at newegg. Good times for sure.

The PC I used at work had a Pentium D and it was faster than my PC at home. Now, if I gamed a lot, (more than just simple, non-intensive games) I’d go with a Core 2 Duo. I keep going back and forth though between a Pentium and an AMD-and as for the RAM 2GB baby. That’s one of my problems now, I only have 1GB on this laptop and you can really tell the difference.

  3. Nick says:

oh yeah, with RAM you can either go big or go home. :)

  4. Beth says:

My PC at my mom’s house has 768, which isn’t bad considering it’s a Dell-honestly I could modify the components in that PC and come out with a really slick machine. But it’s so hard to find IDE hard drives and the way the inside of the machine is situated, fitting the cables in for an SATA drive is almost impossible, (plus I’d have to by the converter), unless I took it to someone who has more patience than myself.

  5. jblu says:

What kind of pc do you have at work? In general, I think desktops are faster than laptops. Nice. I was thinking about building my own pc as the one I’ve got at home is aging (I’m sadly still running a p4). If I do decide to build mines, I’m gonna definitely go with the quad core.

  6. Beth says:

Ya know I think it’s a Dell but I’m not 100% sure. I was laid off until after the first of the year, (God, let’s hope it’s not longer), or I’d take a look. I know it’s a Pentium D because of the sticker on the front of the case. It only has 1GB of RAM but even with the mapping software I used the thing is fast as lightning.

  7. jblu says:

Oh, I see. Are you getting any graphics or sound cards? I should warn you that the ultra xfinity psu has a record for overheating, but that’s probably not gonna be an issue for you as you mentioned you’re not a gamer. I hope your project is a success :)

  8. m says:

I have the same dream! How lucky is that?

  9. Beth says:

jblu: That’s why I plan on adding an additional 2 fans to keep the air flow going. Yes graphics and sound cards are on the list, but I’m undecided as to what I want. Definitely high-end if I can find bargains. I wanted to get the main components installed first, then worry about the graphics and sound once I knew nothing was going to blow up lol

m: what a small world- let’s share our dream together! I’ll email you when I’m getting pissed off at something not fitting in the case the way it’s supposed to and after I’ve sawed it in half.

I built the one I’m using right now at home and it could use some upgrading considering what’s out there nowadays and I always troll newegg looking for stuff that I cannot afford. I do have a Dell at work and it is a slug. They are supposedly looking for a newer used one because they keep telling me there is no money to buy a new one which I think is bullshit but whatever. Now for my home one I do know I will definitely get a better case because I can hear the fans in this one because I have like 4 or something and its sitting right beside me. I have also wanted a Lian-Li case and if/when I start buying again I will definitely set aside the chunk of change to buy that baby.

I put some stickers on my computer today and now it’s faster. Some might even say ’super fast.’

  12. Nick says:

    How2Blogger:
That would explain why my computer is running slow today! I picked up a fresh sticker and put it on my computer but I didn’t know if “8088″ was fast or not. Now I know that it is not fast, but ’super slow’. grumble grumble grumble…

  13. Beth says:

Blueyes: I looked on NewEgg and their prices are a little higher than TigerDirect. I know a lot of people don’t like TD, but I’ve bought memory and a few fans from them in the past and I’ve never had any issues with the products. How much did you spend, (minus the case), on building the one you have now?

How2: Just think of how fast it would be if you found a “Super Fly” sticker, you wouldn’t be able to keep up.

Nick: See my response to How2. Or, glitter stickers. Glitter helps the processor speed up.

  14. Michael says:

only 160Gb of hard drive? come’on you need more than that!

  15. hsm says:

you have great website, but i think that i have great web too :) Look :)

  16. passing by says:

how gaudy is that case? just grab a good antec case w/ps and forget about the glitz.

  17. Beth says:

passing by: I like glitz. In fact, if I could find a case that was pink with glitter and light pink LED lights- I’d buy it in a heart beat.

  18. blueyes says:

You know I have an Upstairs at the Icehouse sticker on my case, it could think it’s drunk all the time??

As for spending how much for what I have now? Couldn’t honestly tell you, I have upgraded the MB, HD and fans a few times since building the sucker lol It’s time for a complete overhaul this time.

  19. Simply Geek says:

    Wow!! Thats an amazing configuration..
    I use a C2D Pc(2×1.86GHz) and Nvidia SLI..
    The performance rocks..
