A Day Of Giving Thanks And Rednecks With Guns.
To all my fellow Americans, Happy Thanksgiving. Today is a time to reflect on the things we have been blessed with in life, just as the Pilgrims did when they landed in Plymouth. I don’t think they had mullet-haired men, with 2 teeth, wearing camo and orange vests, carrying rifles and several cases of beer while hunting down deer, in mind when they celebrated the first Thanksgiving. In fact, the picture to the left is what happens after several hours in the woods, drinking and spraying deer pee on your clothing to attract deer. Don’t underestimate the power of deer in pairs.
My question for the day, since most of us will be with our loved ones, suffering through chewy turkey and jello molds, what do you call the substance put inside, (or, the safe way, baked in its own dish), a turkey? Stuffing, or Dressing? Me? I’ve always called it dressing, unless I’m talking about Stove Top Stuffing. What is the consensus? Stuffing, or Dressing? Leave your answers in the comments. Happy Thanksgiving all!

It’s always been stuffing. Dressing is what you put on salad.
Charlotte: lol, I think most southerners call it dressing. No idea why-that’s why I wanted to ask the question.
About 45 years ago, my grandma taught me that when it’s cooked in the bird it’s stuffing, when it’s cooked in a pan out of the bird it’s dressing. I don’t know if that’s actually correct but, it made sense to me then and still makes sense to me now.
When my grandma made it, it was dressing. When my mom makes it, it’s also dressing. When I make it, it’s Stove Top.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Stuffing. Chestnut stuffing, if we’re at my mom’s. Bread stuffing here because my husband doesn’t like chestnuts.
Interesting about the southern reference. Here we are in the same state but we don’t consider ourselves southern. We’re too close to Pittsburgh for that. I think WV is unique in that it’s so small and yet is partly northeast, partly southern and partly potomac/mid atlantic.
Sorry, just a thanksgiving day ramble….
I call it stuffing, but I’m not sure why since I don’t stuff it. This year there will be a vegetarian joining us, so I won’t even be cooking it in the same pan – or at least his portion. I think I’ll probably put his in a seaprate casserole dish (how do you spell that before you finish your first cup of coffee in the morning?) and then put the rest around the turkey for it’s last hour in the oven. I’m doing brown & wild rice with mushrooms this year. When I’ve done that before I’ve always done it in addition to traditional cornbread stuffing, but there’s just three of us this time and the menu already has too much on it, so I’m going with just the rice.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Stuffing. Mom called it that, Step-Mom calls it that, Grandma calls it that. It’s all I know… with or without it being placed in the bird!
Definitely stuffing!! Dressing should be something you find at the external,, Or am I right? *grin*
Wander: That makes sense, because you do “stuff” the bird, but it’s still the same “stuff.” lol
Karen: LOL I actually prefer Stove Top to some relatives dressings I’ve had before, in fact my mom’s wasn’t that great this year- she blames the bread her man-friend bought.
Marisa: I’ve never had chestnut dressing, I’ve had oyster dressing and hated it. And yeah it is funny- I’m so close to the Southern part of the state and and more of a southern accent so I consider myself more southern than anything. I worked in Parkersburg for 2 months and was amazed at just 2 hours away how different the accents AND personalities were.
Skeet: I love cornbread “dressing”- my aunt made it one year. I think the rice and mushrooms sounds good-heck of a lot healthier too lol
Katy: lol seems like the majority is stuffing.
djahna: lol true- maybe the term dressing comes from the fact one is “dressing the turkey” because some do bake it on the outside.
Stuffing. Although, I don’t think I can remember a time that my Mom EVER stuffed it INTO a turkey. Her stuffing rocks, and I have her make a separate portion for me to bring home during the holidays.
I think you are right. I call it stuffing, but most people I know who were born around here call it dressing.
fuckers.
Fabeo: Told ya- it’s a Southern thing. Plus a lot of West Virginians live in Florida. We rubbed off on everyone.
Now that you mention it, they DO often come up to me and rub up against me. I don’t really care for it.
Remind me not to rub up against you then. Would you rather me pat the top of your head?
You? You may rub up against me with inpunity.
Fabeo: Did you mean impunity? Cause you know I’d never hurt you, maybe make you tingle but that’s the extent of it.
Oh shit…I’ve just been corrected by someone in West Virginia. I will never live this down…
The only thing we have to do here is watch Lingo and Jeopardy, so believe it or not a majority of us rednecks have a large vocabulary.
Stuffing – that’s what our whole family calls it. At one time it was stuffed into the turkey then came the salmonella scare so we cook it out of the bird, but still call it stuffing.
It’s a family, NY transplant into FL kinda thing.
dressing for us is usually the stuff you put on the outside of the turkey. stuffing is inside
Always called it stuffing, dressing is what you put on your salad.
