I Don’t Like Being A Grown-Up.
As I sit here in my DeGrassi Old School haze, remembering the days of leg warmers, Keds and neon socks I’ve decided one thing: I don’t like being a grown-up. The one goal in life I have actually achieved and I hate the every day grind and stresses of being an adult. What happened to the days where the most important event of my day all depended on who I sat with during lunch? The days when my biggest laugh came at the expense of some poor kid who bent over and farted on accident? (Ok, I’ll admit, if one of my co-workers did this, I’d still laugh). What I’m trying to get at- we all couldn’t wait to grow up. From the age of 5, we’re asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” We give an answer and from that point forward our destination is adulthood. “When I grow up I’ll get to do this…”, “When I get bigger you’ll let me….” The famous phrases of childhood. However, I was thinking, quite dangerous I know- I have yet to hear an adult say, “I can’t wait to become a senior citizen.” In fact, truth be told, I would bet a majority of us would rather be a kid again- at times. Cartoons on Saturday mornings, throwing a tantrum when we didn’t get our way, leaving peanut butter and jelly in the corner of our mouths simply because, well we could. No stress. No deadlines. No boss breathing down our necks. Simple, happy times. That’s what I want back. And that glob of cream cheese that fell off my bagel onto my nightgown as I was writing this? I’m smearing it in and leaving it there. Just because I can.

So true. I remember the freedom more than anything. Taking off in the morning during the summer with my bike and discovering something new every day. Trees were toys and bayous were playlands.
I could not wait to get out of school and go to work. WHY? Now, I am trying desperately to retire. LOL
The days of no responsibility … Ive missed that intensely!
Remeber when the biggest worry was how long it would take you to save up for the Atari game/Barbie? Alot easier to save for then a car
I could have sworn I responded to this already. I must have read it in the reader and just nodded heavily and got distracted.
Great post – you took me right back to the “Glory Days”.
I would love to go to school and have my kids stay home and clean the house!!
I feel like this on a regular basis.
Heck, if I could have just a fourth of the energy my 3 year old has, I would be happy.
Awesome post!! I totally agree… we had it so good back then, didn’t we?
